Teaching Squares
The Teaching Squares Program provides faculty
with an opportunity to gain new insight into their teaching through a
process of reciprocal classroom observation and self-reflection. Four
faculty members from across campus will create a "teaching square" and
invite one another to observe their classes. They will then meet over a
complimentary lunch to discuss what they've learned about their own
practice through the observational process. No evaluation. No feedback.
No record. Just the opportunity to reflect on your teaching in the
company of interesting colleagues, all while sampling an equally
interesting buffet.
Teaching Square members commit to three activities:
i) attending an initial organizational meeting to meet their group members and discuss logistics (approx. 1 hr),
ii) visiting each of the other square members' classes at least once in the months of October or November (3 x 1 hr visits),
iii) meeting again, this time over lunch at Michael's, in November for a follow-up reflection (1 hr).
The Fall 2012 organizational meeting will take place on Thursday, October 11th from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. in the Teaching Support Centre. This is a mandatory meeting for all
participants. If you have a teaching conflict that makes it impossible
for you to attend the organizational meeting, please send us an e-mail
at your earliest convenience and we will arrange some alternative.
Note that registration is limited and will close on October 1st.
Since this program requires a certain amount of coordination and
planning among group members, the Squares are fixed prior to the
organizational meeting and additional participants cannot be added
beyond this point. Thus, early registration is imperative.
