Course Description
9548 - Theories Histories - A revised version of the theory's history ... revised in that we will work on the theme of the individual and the political from Plato to Derrida, one text a thinker: Plato, Republic, Aristotle's Politics, a sections of text for the medieval Christian political, renaissance shift (Pico, Machiavelli) moderns Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau, German idealism lecture with Hegel's Philosophy of Right, selections from Marx and Mill, Frankfurt School wide selection from Horkheimer and Adomo, Harbermas, Althauser, Derrida, and Nancy. This course would look closely at short manageable texts each week, no more than two weeks per thinker or movement. The nature of the individual and political and the relation between the two would be the basic theme. The course is designed to provide students with the intellectual background to critical theory through a close reading of some of the seminal texts of the tradition.
