Course Description

9542 - Is Theory Still Possible? Epistemology, theories of science, the humanities, and the social sciences - The aim of the course is to introduce students to some possible anchoring points that may facilitate a dialogue amongst the theoretical work done in those three "areas". Specific concepts like validity, wholeness, falsifiability, order, complexity?etc. will be used as anchoring points for the discussions of the many thinkers and scientists named in the syllabus. The discussion will take the form of comparing and juxtaposing ideas through actual or imaginary dialogues between thinkers belonging to opposing or at least different positions. Although secondary readings will be suggested, the course will generally operate with primary texts. A few introductory readings are included for students who have some background in one area but not in the others.
