The International Student Identity Card or ISIC is the only internationally recognized proof of full-time student status, and is a student discount card in 70 countries, including Canada. Through its affiliation with the International Student Travel Confederation, CFS is the sole issuing authority of the ISIC card in Canada.
For Federation members who are full-time students, the cost of the ISIC is included with membership. Others must purchase the card for $16.00. The Card is available at most student unions and at all Travel CUTS offices.
The ISIC is required for student discounts on domestic air travel and a 30% discount on Via Rail travel. In addition, reduced rates can be obtained for accommodations; admission to some of the world's most renowned museums, historical sights and entertainment attractions. To obtain your ISIC and a booklet outlining all of the discounts available in both Canada and abroad, bring both a passport size photo and your student card to the SOGS office.
ISIC Card:
On March 1, 2011 without notice or consultation with the CFS, VIA Rail replaced its discounted fares
with youth fares. As a result more than 20 per cent of all post secondary students in Canada over the age of 25 are no longer eligible for discounted fares on the VIA Rail. VIA immediately received backlash from ISIC holders on this unexpected change and
have now restored to continue with the previous discount until December 31, 2012. In the meantime,
CFS will be launching a petition drive to call on VIA Rail to maintain the students' discounts for ISIC
holders. VIA Rail is owned by the people of Canada, operated as a Crown Corporation and should be
providing affordable transportation service to everyone in Canada. On behal of our local, a letter was sent to VIA Rail condeming their decision
to discontinue discounts for ISIC holders
ISIC will be distributed on Oct. 4 - Oct. 5 , 2011 (Tuesday and Wednesday), 10am-4pm at the Grad Club. Please come and collect your card!
