It’s official, the Science Internship Program has had its best year EVER!

By Iwona Ciesielka

Yes, its true, we are not joking, this year has been incredible! We have the highest number of Interns out on placement this year, and this is in comparison to the last 11 years!

Since the Science Internship & Career Services Office was formally established 6 years ago, we have been striving to not only increase the number of students involved in this incredibly valuable work experience, but also to increase the involvement from our industry and alumni partners. In particular, we are working to increase the diversity of placements available for all of our students.

Clearly, our efforts are paying off as the placements ranged from the private sector to research to government positions, with a geographical spread that extended beyond Ontario, stretching out to Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta and as far as California. Approximately half of our Interns are in a Biology-related discipline [including the areas in the Bachelor of Medical Science Program], a quarter of the placements are in the IT industry, while the remaining Interns work in the areas of Actuarial Science, Chemistry, Earth Sciences [including Geology and Geophysics] and Physics. We are also very happy to boast that 30% of our employers this year are new to the program.

On the other side of the coin, we have a large group of students who have also returned from their placements, and are raring to go on completing their last year of school. In conversations, it is apparent that all students valued their experience, regardless of whether they worked right here in London or in lands far away [link to Jonathan story]. As the trend goes, many of these young people have returned to school with a full-time job offer on the table.
