Science Interns Come Back to Western

by Iwona Ciesielka

First the feasting This fall, we welcomed back all Science Interns who were participating in placements during the 2002-2003 academic school year. This group included students in Actuarial Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Geophysics. Following their exciting time spent in industry, all interns had stories to tell!

Over pizza and pop, we discussed how they felt about being back at school, how they felt about differences between school and the workplace, ways to improve the current Science Internship Program, relevance of their degree to their work experience, future prospects, etc.

It was extremely rewarding to see that many students felt that their career choice was reaffirmed, and that this was the path they were definitely going to pursue. A few individuals felt that the Internship placement helped them realize that their efforts were better suited to a slightly different area. Overall, all interns felt that this was an extremely worthwhile experience.

Then the sharing Among all the chatter and fun, it became apparent that approximately 1/3 of our interns were already offered or were anticipating full-time employment upon graduation with their internship employer. Several of our interns have continued to be involved with their internship employer on a part-time basis throughout the year. Clearly, a win-win program for both employer and interns!
