Online Mentoring by Christina Fox
Alumni Western hosts an Online Mentoring & Career Networking Program, a career development tool for current students and alumni who seek expertise regarding careers and making connections. A mentorship experience can add value to the transition that students make to the world of work. This program aspires to help students at Western to develop and implement career paths, to create a better understanding of expectations of the employer, to ease the adjustment into the world of work through access to information and to build confidence in networking ability. The Online Mentoring Program also creates an opportunity for alumni to share their perspective and to give back to the community that once guided them with their own transition. Together, the Faculty of Science and Alumni Western are calling on our Science alumni for support! The Online Mentoring Program is web based to facilitate ease of interaction between our alumni and students in the most convenient manner for both. Students send questions to you via email so that you may respond any time of the day. We simply ask that you attempt to answer the inquiry within 48 hours. Your role as an online mentor does not require you to meet one-on-one or provide employment opportunities to students or alumni who contact you. In addition, only members of our password protected online community have access to mentor postings. What kinds of questions can you expect? Students will ask questions from a variety of topics including networking, making the transition from school to a career, balancing home and work, growth potential in your profession, occupational characteristics and others.
