Students Connected with Possible Employers

by Mitchell Zimmer & Iwona Ciesielka

swarm of students
The floor of the J. Thompson Arena looked like a busy market on the afternoon of September 30, 2004. Over 1500 students discussed full time, summer and internship opportunities with various representatives from industrial, scientific, engineering and financial companies as well those in government sectors.

The Connected Career Fair has been an annual event at UWO since 2001, attracting employers and students from IT, Engineering and Business. This past fall, in order to meet requests for a more diversified event, the Connected Career Fair was expanded to include all disciplines in Science, as well as the Bachelor of Administrative & Commercial Studies.

Prior to the Career Fair, students were encouraged to participate in workshops aimed at preparing them for the event. Topics included strategies to get the most information from the fair, appropriate dress, resumes and cover letters, etc. In all, 68 firms from across Ontario and Quebec descended on Western to set up booths in this year' Connected Career fair, which was jointly sponsored by Administrative and Commercial Studies, The Faculty of Engineering, The Faculty of Science and the Richard Ivey School of Business. Following the Career Fair, some companies held information sessions for groups of students to educate them even further about the corporate culture of their particular workplace, benefits offered to new hires, upcoming positions, etc.

one on oneThe Connected Career Fair is an annual event which provides both students and company representatives an opportunity to meet and learn about each other. It offers students the chance to network with people in their chosen career and companies can assess the talent at Western. Moreover, meeting each other face-to-face at an event like this goes beyond the information provided by a company brochure or a graduate's resume.

If you would like to participate in the next Connected Career Fair on September 29, 2005, please contact Gail Wendt in the Science Career Services Office [gwendt@uwo.ca or 519-661-2111 X85300]
