A Message From Prof. Duncan Hunter, Associate Dean (Research)

Prof. duncan Hunter These are unique and exciting times for research in Ontario and in Canada and the effect has been felt strongly in the Faculty of Science at Western. In the last few years annual research expenditures by faculty members in Science have grown from about $11 million in 1998 to about $30 million in the current year. This increased expenditure is a result of an influx of research funds that has come from both federal and provincial sources and has served to enhance not only the research facilities but also the support of faculty and students. Programs include the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and Ontario Innovation Trust, which provide major funding for infrastructure, Canada Research Chairs that support senior and junior outstanding researchers, the Premier's Research Excellence Awards that support graduate students for young outstanding faculty, and Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund that provides major support for personnel.

These exceptional programs are on top of the traditional source of support for researchers in science, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), which provides about $10 million per year to individual scientists. About 95% of the faculty members in Science are supported by NSERC Discovery grants. This means that about 95% of the Science faculty members have active research programs. Active research programs means graduate students are being trained to provide the highly qualified individuals essential for our future. It also means that the individuals who teach the undergraduates are not only 'au current' with the scientific advances in their fields but are creating these advances.
