Science Industry Internship Program at a glance
- extended work term (12-16 months) allows students to participate in projects from
beginning to end
- placements vary widely, tailored to the needs of employers and interns
- opportunities include public, private and not-for-profit sectors
- Interns are regarded as regular employees, taking on responsibilities far beyond the
typical duties assigned to a 4-month co-op or summer student
- internships usually begin between May and September, but can be flexible
- Ontario Employers who hire students in "degree-related work opportunities" are
eligible for the Co-operative Education Tax Credit
- Students are available in all areas of Science, including Applied Mathematics, Biology,
Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy,
Statistical & ActuGeneva, Arial, Helvetica Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences
[Biochemistry, Medical Biophysics, Microbiology & Immunology,
Physiology & Pharmacology]
- Upon returning to Western, Interns act as ambassadors of the sponsoring
employer
- In the 2001-2002 school year, 38 Science Interns were placed in industry. These students
are currently completing their placements in ActuGeneva, Arial, Helvetica Science,
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Earth Sciences.
