Internship Experience leads Biology student Coros to CALA Award

Biology student Alexandra Coros is one of two recipients of the 2010 Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation Inc. (CALA) John Lawrence Student Scholarship Award.


Alexandra completed her Science Internship with the National Laboratory for Environmental Testing at the Wastewater Technology Centre Analytical Laboratory, Environment Canada in Burlington, Ontario. Coros submitted a paper to CALA entitled “The Challenges of Analyzing Trace Contaminants in Wastewater” for consideration and met all of the required criteria. The requisite themes included:  Importance of Data Quality; Value of Accreditation; and Quality Assurance and Quality in Testing Measurements and Experimentation.  Her paper was selected from the various applicants for method development work conducted on sewage samples for Bisphenol-A, a controversial chemical used in the manufacture of hard plastic toys, bottles and food containers.
