Earlier this June, the Chemistry Department celebrated the completion of a ten year project giving Western a unique edge in North America. The official ribbon cutting ceremony of the Solvent Dispensing Facility marked a significant upgrade in safety. In chemistry facilities throughout the world, one of the potentially dangerous routine operations is dispensing solvents for laboratories. Safety is always an issue when the most common solvents are both flammable and volatile. Consequently, buildings that possess both proper containment and ventilation are sought after and expensive. The chemistry department now has the best of both worlds in the new specially built room that boasts state of the art ventilation, emergency drainage systems and hydraulic dispensing stations. The idea for the facility was first proposed by former Chemistry Chair Rob Lipson who happened to be visiting London and was invited to cut the ribbon of the new facility. The event was also a chance to showcase the improvements throughout the department Mass Spectrometer Facility, X-Ray Facility and the new laboratories for NSERC Industrial Research Chairs David Shoesmith and Clara Wren.
