This workshop will teach you what employers are looking for and how you can use this opportunity to show potential employers how you can be a valuable member of their team. It will specifically address the topics of: skills identification, information gathering, and effective short forms communication and presentation.

Learn how to connect with employers who do not advertise job positions. Learn how to use volunteer, co-op and internship placements, part-time and summer opportunities, employer information sessions, information interviews, career fairs, special events, and other methods of networking to secure contacts with employers

Preparing for Non-Academic Employment - for PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows
May 10 – 14, 2010

A one week program for PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows
The Student Success Centre , in cooperation with The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, is pleased to offer a one week program for 30 students who are actively seeking non-academic employment. Participants will work in a small group setting with other PhD candidates and Postdoctoral Fellows, staff members and employers to prepare for the process of job searching outside of the academy. Topics covered will include: Self-assessment, Transferable skills identification, the Targeted Job Search, From CV to resume, The Art of Networking, Understanding the Employers’ Perspective, Refining your Interview Skills and Follow-up and Negotiation Strategies.
Participants must be:
• Currently enrolled, completed, or within two years of completion of a PhD program or currently a Postdoctoral Fellow
• Willing to work in a small group environment
• Able to commit to 5 full days (May 10 – 14, 2010) - 9:00am – 4:00 pm
• Considering or actively seeking employment outside of academia.
Interested students are to:
1) Register through Career Central.
2) and attend ONE information session:
