Giving is something you learn more about throughout your life. At this stage in my life, the thing that motivates me about giving is reflecting on what got me to where I am today. Invariably it comes back to the same thing: a lot of people did a lot of things that were unselfish and focused on building for future generations.
I feel incredibly fortunate to be among the nearly quarter million alumni who hold a Western degree. I fondly remember walking through this beautiful campus, experiencing the proud athletic traditions, enjoying the social structure of the university, and growing from the great education I received.
It may not occur to students when they are here exactly how all this gets put together, but you realize over time that it’s the leadership of some great individuals and the broader community that provides it all. And slowly but surely, that drives a sense of obligation that it may be time to contribute and make a difference to the next generation.
This campaign builds on everything that has come before us and made Western what it is today. And it gives us the energy to aspire to become even better. Our goals are to address a changing world, a changing student population, a changing research agenda, a changing need for physical infrastructure, and to make sure the experience that future generations take away from Western is the best it can possibly be.
