The following list of incentive programs is meant to assist faculty in the successful recruitment of graduate students in the next admission cycle. The application forms are available at:
$8,000 per year provided as a grant to supervisors for two years for each incremental domestic student. Supervisors eligible are those who are currently training 4 or more students, not including Year X. The program is meant to provide support to larger research groups where there is interest in growth.
-16 awards are available with adjudication beginning on March 1, 2014 and continuing until all awards are allocated. Applications will be judged on the research quality of the student and by the training opportunity. PhD applicants will be preferred.
-faculty will not receive these funds if the incremental student holds an NSERC, OGS or other major award
-faculty will not be able to use the Incremental program and the Doctoral scholarship for the same student
Five doctoral awards of $5,000 per year for two years and five MSc awards of $5000 for one year will be provided to support faculty who are co-supervising domestic students who are conducting interdisciplinary research. These funds will go towards the student stipend.
-the adjudication will begin on March 1, 2014 and continue until all awards are allocated.
-student research projects that involve co-supervision across departments or Faculties will be favoured
The Western Science Doctoral Scholarship
Five doctoral scholarships of $8,000 per year for two years will be provided to incoming domestic PhD students of superior calibre.
-the adjudication will begin on March 1, 2014 and continue until all awards are allocated. Applications will be judged on the past research productivity of the student and their future research potential.
-students may not hold this award simultaneously with an NSERC, OGS or other major award
-faculty will not be able to use the Incremental program and the Doctoral scholarship for the same student.
The Western Science Entrance Scholarships
Sixteen one-time entrance scholarships of $2,500 will be provided to domestic applicants of high caliber as an incentive to study at Western.
-the adjudication will begin on March 1, 2014 and continue until all awards are allocated. Applications will be judged on the research productivity of the student or their research potential.
The Western Science Undergraduate Pre-thesis Award
Fifteen summer research stipends of $4,500 will be allocated to domestic undergraduates that are between their 3rd and 4th year or about to complete their 4th year of study. Strong support must come from the supervisor, including a minimum match of $1,500.
-the adjudication will begin on March 1, 2014 and continue until all awards are allocated. Applications must include a statement of research that demonstrates that the project has scope to develop into graduate school work. The student must have a cumulative average of 80%.
-Priority will be given to supervisors who are currently training 4 or more students (not including Year X) or probationary faculty.
-Students accepting this award after fourth year are expected to apply for graduate school here.
The program exists to provide support for post-doctoral recruitment (20K per year for 2 years – 5 awards available). Researchers must demonstrate that the leadership and supervisory ability of the post doc will contribute to the addition of incremental domestic graduate students. Researchers must also demonstrate how the post doc will accelerate the labs activities in interdisciplinarity, partnership and/or team grants will also strengthen the application
