Master's of Environment and Sustainability [MES]
Summer Co-op Program
There’s more to Sustainability than recycling , but what else can you do to make your business less harmful to the environment? The University of Western Ontario and the Centre for Environment & Sustainability would like to highlight one of their newest summer co-op programs that might be able to help you.
The Master's in Environment & Sustainability (MES)
is an interdisciplinary, one-year, course-based program at The
University of Western Ontario, which uses project-based learning to
enhance the graduate student's skill-set, in preparation for a career in
the environmental field. This relatively new program has a requirement
of completing a four month summer co-op.
Our students are making a
difference across the province, and in London, they have been involved
in some of the following activities:

Researching lifecycles of various materials including their manufacturing process, uses and subsequent processing stages to identify areas in need of improvement. The student also researched funding and grants for environmental projects, as well as assisting with new product and market development. |

The need was to assist in creating a 3-year strategic sustainability plan for the Corporate Office and club locations. Last year’s student was subsequently hired on a full-time basis. |

Having used the services of MES summer co-op students for the past 2 years, alternative methods of transportation were measured (e.g., carpooling, cycling, walking, and public transit) in an attempt to decrease automobile usage, especially the single occupant vehicle. |

A baseline analysis was created for sustainability, using The Natural Step framework, which resulted in a waste diversion project and an eco-friendly construction alternatives project. |
Western's Master's of Environment and Sustainability [MES] program aims to provide students with skills and experience needed to compete for an entry level position as an environmental professional in industry, a non-governmental organization, or a government department.
The summer co-op follows two intensive academic terms of Western’s interdisciplinary Environment & Sustainability Program (MES). When on campus, students actively participate in classes, workshops, discussion groups, a consulting project, and more. MES graduates posses the necessary skills, training and knowledge to succeed as a junior environmental professional in a non-governmental, industrial, or governmental setting.
We hope that you will include an MES Summer Co-op student as an integral member of your team. We invite YOU to participate in the MES Co-op Program!
