Sponsor/Award: GENOME ALBERTA - RSRCH & INNOVATION LEADING TO RAPID DETECTION OF E.COLI - 2013 COMPETITION - LOI STAGE

Grant Amount:
Deadline: Dean's: Contact your Faculty Research Office for deadline details.
Internal: Jan 07, 2013
Sponsor's: Jan 14, 2013

Subject Areas:
Description:

The purpose of the Program is to fund research and innovation that will ultimately lead to commercially viable genomics based technologies that can be used for rapid detection of pathogenic E. coli, in food production with emphasis on meat and meat production. The resulting technologies will be used to assist with food safety regulatory compliance and to contribute to consumer protection. Such a test will be integral to development of national baselines, surveillance and/or monitoring of E. coli to demonstrate pathogen reduction in Canadian food and meat products.

There will be a two stage process, Letter of Intent (LOI) and Full Proposal. Those submissions ranked by the peer review panel as being the top ranked LOIs that best meet the objectives of the Program will be invited to submit a full proposal. It is the intention that only a few LOIs will go forward to the full proposal phase.

Application Details:

Project proposals should be limited to E. coli and include: ? New strategies for rapid detection of pathogenic (or pathogenic in combination with generic) E. coli from the farm to the retailer with emphasis on the meat processing sector. ? Detection strategies/technologies that could be used to remove trade barriers and facilitate market access, including use in the development of base line information, surveillance and monitoring, as well as compliance to regulations in the meat processing environment. ? Engagement of end-users to ensure that the proposed technology/test can be implemented and will be of benefit to end-users

LOI and Full Proposal submissions are to be submitted via email. The LOI form, full proposal form, and program guidelines can be found at the Genome Alberta website at www.genomealberta.ca. Once the LOI portion of the process is complete, the successful applicants will be asked to complete a full proposal form. All documentation must be submitted through email, with signature of all applicants, attention to: Heather Smith Program Coordinator HSmith@genomealberta.ca (403) 503-5220, Extension 24

INSTITUTIONAL OVERHEAD IS NOT AN ALLOWABLE EXPENSE.

NOTE: All Letters of Intent and Full Applications must be processed through Research Development & Services for institutional approval. Requests for Institutional approvals should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline. A ROLA Proposal (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean electronic approvals) is required for each submission.
