Sponsor/Award: Grand Challenges in Global Health - BIOMARKERS FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF TUBERCULOSIS - 2011 WINTER COMPETITION - LETTER OF INTENT

Grant Amount: UP TO $750K USD
Deadline: Dean's: Contact your Faculty Research Office for deadline details.
Internal: Mar 24, 2011
Sponsor's: Mar 31, 2011

Subject Areas: Biomarkers, Tuberculosis
Description:

This program seeks to validate biomarkers for use in developing a low cost, simple to use test that can quickly and accurately diagnose tuberculosis in low-resource settings. Projects funded through this Program will be considered Phase 1 grantees in our "Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Tuberculosis" research program. Promising candidate biomarkers or combinations of biomarkers at the end of Phase 1 (up to 24 months) that have demonstrated proof of concept for utility in diagnosing TB in the samples provided will be eligible to apply for follow on funding in Phase 2. The focus of projects in Phase 2 will be optimization of methods for detection and testing of the biomarker(s) in a prospective sample collection from TB suspects in clinics representing geographies of interest to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Assuming proposals of sufficient merit, this competition is expected to fund between 10-14 grants for an aggregate total cost of $12 million USD over two years. Individual grants are eligible for up to $750,000 per project.

Application Details:

The goal of this program is to test biomarkers to enable characterization and validation of markers for diagnosing tuberculosis (TB). Projects that will be considered for funding will investigate specific biomarkers for which there exists a preliminary base of evidence, but for which additional data is required to determine utility for diagnosis.

A letter of inquiry (LOI) in response to this request for applications should be submitted no later than March 31, 2011 10:00 AM PST. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will evaluate the LOIs and applicants who have projects of further interest to the Gates Foundation will be invited in May 2011 to submit a full proposal in June 2011. Letters of inquiry must be submitted electronically, using the forms and process described at the following address http://www.grandchallenges.org/biomarkers/Pages/BiomarkersInformation.aspx

INDIRECT COSTS OF 15% MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE PROJECT BUDGET

NOTE: Letters of Intent and Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development Services for institutional signatures, and are to be accompanied by a completed RDAF form (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean signatures). Requests for Institutional signatures should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline.
