Description:

The Ontario Research Fund Research Excellence (ORF-RE) program promotes research excellence in Ontario by supporting transformative, internationally significant research of strategic value to the province. The ORF-RE focuses on scientific excellence, strong commercialization, and strategic value to Ontario, and targets new, leading-edge research initiatives. All proposals are required to provide a rationale as to why an investment in their research project is important to Ontario. Applicants are expected to demonstrate meaningful and verifiable private sector commitment, through private sector financial/cash and/or in-kind contributions and evidence of the private sector's vested interest in the research.

While research proposals in all disciplines are eligible for ORF-RE Round 5, the Ministry particularly encourages collaborative projects across institutions and disciplines from the following focus areas, outlined in the Ontario Innovation Agenda: Bio-economy and clean technologies, Advanced Health technologies, Digital Media & Information & Communications Technologies.

Application Details:

The program will contribute towards eligible costs to a maximum of 1/3 of the total project costs, with 1/3 of the remainder coming from the applicant institution(s) and 1/3 from the private sector. Institutional and private sector contributions to direct costs can be cash or in-kind.

Applicants must submit a NOI by the deadline date. One paragraph (500 word) overview is required with each NoI and will be posted on the ORF-RE website to help institutions identify opportunities for meaningful collaboration on projects with similar research topics or with similar objectives. A Notice of Intent is to be submitted by an eligible institution and must be signed by the Vice-President of Research or any other officer with authority to bind the institution. A signed original and an electronic copy of the NoI must be received and/or postmarked no later than July 30, 2010. The form is available on the Sponsor's website.

INDIRECT COSTS OF 40% MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE PROJECT BUDGET

NOTE: Letters of Intent and Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development Services for institutional signatures, and are to be accompanied by a completed RDAF form (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean signatures).
