Description:

The basic research fellowship program is a strategic initiative to encourage promising young scientists possessing a doctoral qualification (MD or PhD) in medicine to enter the field of Parkinson's research and to invest in research training that offers promise for future work in the area of Parkinson's disease. Funds awarded under the Program are to be used to cover salary, benefits and expenses for research fellowships in Parkinson's-related areas. Through this initiative, PSC invites fellowship applications from applicants committed to conducting biomedical research in areas relevant to the cure, cause, prevention, improved treatment and/or understanding of Parkinson's disease. The Program is available to individuals who possess a doctoral qualification (MD or PhD).

Through this initiative, PSC invites fellowship applications from applicants committed to conducting biomedical research in areas relevant to the cure, cause, prevention, improved treatment and/or understanding of Parkinson's disease, related disorders including: Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) other Parkinson's conditions and the impact these diseases have on society. This initiative is consistent with, and reflects, PSC's commitment to support innovation and renewal in the national Parkinson's research field and to foster international leadership potential in this area.

Application Details:

Clinician scientist (MD) candidates are eligible for funding in the amount of $50,000 per year over a two-year term. Consistent with CIHR salary scales based on years of research training experience, post-doctoral (PhD) candidates with two years or less experience in research are eligible for funding in the amount of $40,000 and those with more than two years experience are eligible for funding in the amount of $50,000. Upon completion of two years of postgraduate research training during the tenure of the award, the applicant may be eligible to receive an award increase to the higher level, subject to a maximum amount awarded under the Program of $50,000. Awards granted under the Program shall be held in trust by the Approved Institution at which the proposed supervisor of the successful applicant holds a faculty appointment. An Approved Supervisor should be an investigator actively directing research either in the field of Parkinson's disease or working in a highly relevant discipline and must be able to provide the successful applicant with a strong training environment.

Applications are submitted digitally through the Parkinson Society Canada online program located on the PSC website at http://www.parkinsonresearch.ca/research/rhtml/IndexEN.php where applicants can register and complete an application form. In addition, applicants will need to provide a Letter of Support from the supervisor and a summary outlining the proposed training program, submitted by the supervisor. Applications must be submitted with the required signatures by the due date. Prior to submission, applicants should determine what signatures are needed, print the applicant information sheet (generated by printing the personal information form from the online application system) and obtain all the required signatures for their application. Once obtained, scan the signature page and upload the signed signature page to the PSC online system as part of your submission by the application deadline date. Applicants do not need to courier any documents to Parkinson Society Canada; however, we do ask that you keep the original signed documents which may be requested in the event that your application is successful in the competition.

INDIRECT COSTS ARE NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS PROGRAM.

NOTE: All Letters of Intent and Full Applications must be processed through Research Development & Services for institutional approval. Requests for Institutional approvals should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline. A ROLA Proposal (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean electronic approvals) is required for each submission.
