Description:

All subject areas may apply. Funded annually by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International Relations), the Western Innovation Fund is intended to move new research results forward along the path towards commercialization and to provide incentive to validate and develop commercial opportunities.

The competitions are for one-time projects based on existing research initiatives and are expected to be of short duration (6 - 12 months). Projects are expected to bridge the gap between research results and existing proof of principle grants such as the CIHR POP or the NSERC i2i programs. The applicant will have to demonstrate the need in the marketplace, as well as a method to meet that need, i.e. a marketing plan. General conditions governing eligibility to apply, supportable research fields, and use of grant funds will be in conformity with Tri-Council guidelines.

Application Details: The program is administered jointly managed by WORLDiscoveries and Research Development & Services under the general terms of reference of the Western Innovation Fund.Normally, projects are based on a technology, a concept, a process, or an artistic piece that has been disclosed to WORLDiscoveries by way of a Report of Invention, followed by a Letter of Intent and an application. WORLDiscoveries personnel are available to assist with the structuring of the application or for consultation on issues related to intellectual property, marketing intelligence and commercialization strategy.
NOTE: All research-related grant applications, letters of intent, contracts and agreements requiring an institutional or organizational signature must submit related documents to the Office of Research Services for review and approval. Requests for institutional signature should be received a minimum of five to ten business days before the posted Sponsor deadline. Please see Western Research's website regarding the institutional signatory process for more details. Specific opportunities may have their own timelines and requirements for submissions. A ROLA Proposal submitted by the PI and bearing department and faculty approvals is required.
