The aim of this Collaborative Centres of HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research funding opportunity is to build HIV/AIDS CBR capacity across Canada, to create new and maintain existing partnerships between community and academia, and to foster the development of new HIV/AIDS CBR projects and applications for funding.

Applications are permitted to involve international researchers and CBR researchers beyond the realm of HIV/AIDS, but the focus of applications must clearly be on building HIV/AIDS CBR capacity across Canada. The team must involve members listed as applicants (applicant includes the following roles: NPA, PA, Co-Applicant, PKU, KU) from at least six of the different geographical areas: North, Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies, Alberta, BC.

Application Details:

Community-based research (CBR) is a collaborative approach to research that equitably involves all partners in the research process and recognizes the unique strengths that each brings. CBR begins with a research topic of importance to the community with the aim of combining knowledge and action for social change to improve community health and eliminate health disparities. CBR brings researchers together with members of the community to: identify the issues; collect, analyze and interpret the data; and decide how to use the results to inform policy, change practice and improve conditions in the community. Through the HIV/AIDS CBR Program, CIHR supports research that engages communities in all stages of research, from the definition of the research question, to capacity building and integration of community members in conducting research, to active participation in disseminating research results. In addition to these principles, CBR espouses the same values of methodological rigor and ethical review as other research approaches.
