Description:

The Stem Cell Network (SCN) recognizes that future development of stem cell research in Canada rests on the successful transition of post-doctoral fellows and research associates to Principal Investigator (PI) status.The Transitional Research Grant Program established by the SCN aims to recognize outstanding young Canadian researchers by giving them the opportunity to be principal co-applicants (with their supervising SCN PI) on SCN-funded research grants.

The application process follows a two-step process. In the first step, the candidate must submit a Letter of Intend (LOI) to SCN, which will invite successful LOIs to submit a full application in step two of the application process. In addition, successful LOI applicants will be requested to attend a one-day workshop to be held in conjunction with the SCN Annual Scientific Meeting (April 30 to May 2, 2012). The workshop is intended to provide in-depth knowledge on writing successful grant proposals.

Application Details:

The Transitional Research Grant will support research projects with the purpose of developing and initiating the trainees own independent research program. In addition, the Transitional Research Grant Program will promote research excellence among senior trainees; retention of SCN trainees to the field of stem cell research and to Canada; and networking among SCN trainees and PIs. The Transitional Research Grant Program will support basic and clinical research in stem cell and related disciplines by outstanding post-doctoral fellows or research associates.. Candidates must be either post-doctoral fellows with a minimum of two year of post-doctoral experience (at the time of applying) or research associates, and working in the stem cell field under the supervision of a SCN PI. Candidates must have worked for a minimum of two years in the stem cell field prior to applying for the award and must intend to pursue research directly related to this area. The candidate must not have more than five years of post-PhD cumulative experience by the competition deadline.

A Letter of Intent (LOI) must be submitted by February 1, 2012. Please use the LOI template available on the website for this purpose.

NOTE: All Letters of Intent and Full Applications must be processed through Research Development & Services for institutional approval. Requests for Institutional approvals should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline. A ROLA Proposal (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean electronic approvals) is required for each submission.
