Internal: Aug 20, 2012
Sponsor's: Aug 27, 2012

Subject Areas: Intellectual Property, Cellular Therapy, Stem Cells
Description:

Funded by the Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) since 2001, the Stem Cell Network (SCN)'s mission is to act as a catalyst for enabling translation of stem cell research into clinical applications, commercial products or public policy. In order to complement its Core Research Program, SCN is launching a new research initiative, the Impact Grant Program, which is aimed at funding one year research projects that are partnered and that have high potential for translational impact while addressing the Network's mission. In order to receive SCN funds, successful applicants must execute a Standard NCE Network Agreement, through which they will become a member of the Stem Cell Network, and take on all of the associated rights and obligations. These obligations include the requirement to provide SCN office with a project report as requested.

Commercialization Impact Grants are aimed at projects that generate novel technologies and intellectual property (IP) that have commercial value in the stem cell research or therapeutics markets. It complements the existing IP Protection Fund that provides funds for filing provisional patent applications to protect IP that has been developed through SCN-funded research. It is anticipated that the Commercialization Impact Grant program will principally support projects under two categories: Category 1: The development of stem cell-related products or services for the research market to the point where they will be ready for commercial license by an industry partner at the completion of the one-year term of the project. The application must set out a coherent product research and development plan and be accompanied by a strong letter of support from an industry partner. Category 2: The generation of data to support the further development of IP between the filing of a provisional patent application and first filing of the complete patent application.

Application Details:

The Stem Cell Network is now conducting an open call for Impact Research Grants in three specific areas. Impact Grants are reviewed every three months; deadlines for application are indicated in the application guidelines. The Network expects to fund 10-20 impact grants over the next four years.

The application must be supported by a letter of support from an industry partner as described above (category 1) OR a copy of the relevant provisional patent application and a letter of support from a third party (category 2). Deliver completed proposal by e-mail to info@stemcellnetwork.ca by midnight on the due date (see table below for competition schedule). Letters of support can be either included in the application package as PDF files, or sent directly by email to info@stemcellnetwork.ca, or sent to the SCN office by express mail by the due date.

INDIRECT COSTS ARE NOT LEVIED ON THIS PROGRAM

NOTE: All Letters of Intent and Full Applications must be processed through Research Development & Services for institutional approval. Requests for Institutional approvals should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline. A ROLA Proposal (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean electronic approvals) is required for each submission.
