Subject Areas: Industry, Multidisciplinary
Description:

MITACS ACCELERATE is a national internship program managed by MITACS Inc which connects companies and other organizations with the vast research expertise in Canada's universities. The intern must be a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow at a Canadian university. The intern will undertake a research project which has the potential to lead to, or supplement, the student's thesis in the case of a graduate student or to further the PDF's research program. An intern spends approximately half of his/her time over a four-month period on site with the partner, gaining a better understanding of the research issue in question. The balance of the intern's time is spent back at the university, further advancing the research under the guidance of a faculty supervisor.

Once the financial commitment from the company is secured and the research question is identified, an application can be put forward to ACCELERATE even before the the prospective trainees/interns have been identified. The possibility of having funds in place can act as a good trainee recruitment tool. Note that when clusters of students are engaged, it is understood that there will be economies of scale and a smaller amount of money therefore goes to the university supervisor for costs related to "clustered" internships. There is usually a one-month turnaround time between application submission and decision.

Application Details:

Projects can be undertaken in a wide range of areas, including manufacturing, technical innovation, business processes, IT, social sciences and much more, and can involve any university faculty or department. The MITACS ACCELERATE program provides $15,000 for Masters or PhD or Post-doctoral research internships. The internships are four-months long with 25% to 50% of the trainee's time spent on campus, and a minimum of 50% spent working for a sponsoring company. A company contributes $7,500 toward a research project/intern and ACCELERATE matches this.

A preference is given to applicants having a for-profit company partner however, the program is very flexible and any instance where there is a project and a partner, the program should be considered. The ACCELERATE officer will speak directly with the student, the partner and the professor if needed. ACCELERATE have offered to speak with every applicant before the RD&S office signs off so that they can read through the application and provide feedback to ensure that it will eventually be funded.

INDIRECT COSTS ARE NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS PROGRAM

NOTE: All Letters of Intent and Full Applications must be processed through Research Development & Services for institutional approval. Requests for Institutional approvals should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline. A ROLA Proposal (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean electronic approvals) is required for each submission.
