Description:

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada New Investigator award provides salary support to individuals who have clearly demonstrated excellence during their doctoral and post-doctoral training in cardiovascular or cerebrovascular research. At the time of submission, no more than five (5) years may have passed since the date of the first faculty appointment. The university or institution is expected to guarantee the applicant appropriate academic rank and to provide adequate space and facilities for the investigator's research, commensurate with the status of the individual's experience and level of support by HSFC.

Applicants wishing to be considered for the Distinguished Clinician Scientist award should check the appropriate box in the Senior Personnel application form. Candidates applying for this award will also be considered in the regular pool of New Investigator applicants. This award, which is partnered this year with CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health, will be offered to the highest ranked eligible clinician in the New Investigator competition if funding availability permits. The Distinguished Clinician Scientist award carries a higher stipend than the New Investigator award, plus an additional research allowance. Guidelines for application are identical to New Investigator except where otherwise indicated.

Application Details:

A New Investigator may not be in receipt of another major Personnel award (i.e. from another national funding agency) at the same time as holding a Personnel Award from HSFC. The applicant must have an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree. The applicant must hold a Grant-in-Aid in support of the proposed research at the time of this award; such grant(s) may be from the Heart and Stroke Foundation and/or other granting agencies.

Applicants are strongly cautioned to carefully read and follow the instructions and requirements outlined in this guideline document as well as the Checklist page of the application form. Applications for the New Investigator award must be received by the Heart and Stroke Foundation (HSF) no later than 16:00 (EDT) on August 31, 2012.

INDIRECT COSTS ARE NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS PROGRAM.

NOTE: All Letters of Intent and Full Applications must be processed through Research Development & Services for institutional approval. Requests for Institutional approvals should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline. A ROLA Proposal (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean electronic approvals) is required for each submission.
