Description:

The Post Doctoral Fellowship Program is designed to support research excellence in targeted economic sectors aligned with Ontario's research and innovation agenda. The Program assists in the support of a Post Doctoral Fellow selected and appointed solely and independently by the Institution, to conduct research activities at the Institution's premises as the PDF prepares for a full-time academic and/or research career.

The Ministry of Research and Innovation has awarded Western with four Post-Doctoral Fellowships. The purpose of the Post Doctoral Fellowship Program (PDF) is to recruit and retain outstanding young scientists to spend two years as post-doctoral fellows in Ontario research institutions and support these PDFs through a provincial network. Under this program, each PDF will receive $50,000 annually for two years. Of that total, $25,000 will be provided from the Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI) and the additional $25,000 will be provided by the institution (faculty). The program is open to all disciplines but the Ministry encourages alignment of their research activity with key priority sectors as outlined in Ontario?s Innovation Agenda: bio-economy and clean technologies, advanced health technologies, pharmaceutical research and manufacturing, and digital media and information and communication technologies.

Application Details:

Selection and appointment of the PDF by the Institution will be based on a competitive process managed solely and independently by the Institution as part of its suite of scholarships, fellow- ships and student awards. PDFs are open to scientists in all disciplines. They're intended to support research as outlined in Ontario?s Innovation Agenda: bio-economy and clean technologies, advanced health technologies, pharmaceutical research and manufacturing, and digital media and information and communication technologies. To be eligible, PDF applicants must meet certain criteria as of the deadline date of the year in which they apply.

Three original signed letters of reference directed to the institution are to be provided. The letters should address the excellence and promise of the applicant, and the excellence, importance and potential impact of the research, in terms of contribution to knowledge, social, or economic benefits. The letters of reference may be from a former supervisor, mentor, collaborator or corporate sponsor familiar with the researcher. All original signed letters must be received by the application deadline. Matching funding can come from any source, excluding other Ontario government sources or programs, to match the Ontario contribution. All applications, addressed to Antoinette Martin, should be received at SSB 5150, on or before 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 31st, 2010. A selection committee comprising Associate Deans Research of all Western's Faculties will be called shortly after the May 31st, 2010 deadline.

INDIRECT COSTS ARE NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS PROGRAM.

NOTE: Letters of Intent and Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development Services for institutional signatures, and are to be accompanied by a completed RDAF form (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean signatures). Requests for Institutional signatures should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline.
