Description:

With support from The Arthritis Society, CAN offers a limited number of summer placements for highly-motivated students registered in Canadian medical schools to work with a researcher who is a member of CAN and who is conducting research/development focused on arthritis. The program also accepts clinical students in allied health professional fields such as dentistry, rehabilitation sciences (including physiotherapy and occupational therapy), nursing, pharmaceutical studies and veterinary medicine.

In 2010, CAN will support up to ten trainees. A group of CAN Investigators selected by the Training and Education Committee will review the applications. Review criteria include: 1. the applicant?s interest in arthritis research; and, 2. the relevance and suitability of the proposed research project.

Application Details: This training program will support medical and allied health professional students for a summer term (up to 3 months) to participate in arthritis research. Potential projects include basic, applied, clinical, health services or population health research. The Summer Program will provide a bursary for the trainee (plus travel expenses, if applicable, up to a maximum of $1,500). Other costs, such as operating funds and supplies for the project, are the responsibility of the participating host laboratory or clinical research centre. Students registered in a Canadian medical school or recognized health professional programs are eligible to apply. Placements must be carried out under direct supervision of a CAN Investigator. The stipend per student is a maximum of $6,000 (assuming a minimum of 37.5 hours per week for 12 weeks over the summer). The stipend will be pro-rated for projects that are shorter than proposed.The supervisor must be a CAN Network Investigator able to provide an appropriate research/development environment and willing to make time available to supervise the student.
NOTE: Letters of Intent and Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development Services for institutional signatures, and are to be accompanied by a completed RDAF form (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean signatures). Requests for Institutional signatures should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline.
