Deadline: Dean's: N/A
Internal: N/A
Sponsor's: N/A

Subject Areas: Physical Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Personnel, Industry
Description:

Industrial Research Chairs (IRC) are intended to: - assist universities in building on existing strengths to achieve the critical mass required for a major research endeavour in science and engineering of interest to industry; and/or - assist in the development of research efforts in fields that have not yet been developed in Canadian universities but for which there is an important industrial need; and - provide an enhanced training environment for graduate students and, where appropriate, postdoctoral fellows, by exposing them to research challenges unique to industry and the opportunity for significant ongoing interactions with the industrial partner(s).

The IRC proposal must be in an area of high priority for both the university and the industrial partner(s). The university commitment includes tenured, tenure-track, or five-year non-tenured term appointments, and adequate lab/office space for the research group. Chairholders are expected to focus their activities on conducting research and training highly qualified personnel, while carrying a reduced administrative and teaching load.

Application Details:

NSERC offers three types of Industrial Research Chairs: Senior IRC, Associate IRC and Executive IRCs. An IRC grant provides funding for the salary of the Chairholder, infrastructure, research tools and instruments, and general expenses related to the Chair's program of research. IRCs are funded jointly by NSERC and industry. Provincial & Federal government departments and agencies may also co-sponsor/support an IRC, but only industrial contributions are taken into account when NSERC determines its funding level. he establishment of an IRC must increase the research capacity of the university in the proposed area of research by creating new tenured or tenure-track faculty position(s). In the case of an external candidate, the Chairholder is considered to be the incremental position. In the case of an internal candidate, who already holds a faculty appointment, the university must agree to create a new tenured or tenure-track faculty position(s) in the research area of the Chair program, or in one closely related and complementary to it. The new faculty position(s) must be appointed following the approval of the Chair.

Please see NSERC's website for detailed guidelines on the various eligibility guidelines for IR Chairs. The person submitting an IRC proposal (the ?applicant? on Form 101) must hold a senior administrative position in the university with direct or ultimate management responsibility for the proposed Chairholder. The applicant cannot be the candidate for the Chair. Applications may be submitted at any time. Use Forms 100, 101 and 183A and follow the instructions for preparing an IRC submission. Three letters of reference for each Chair candidate should be sent directly to NSERC. Awards of Chairs are contingent upon the submission of a research agreement between the university and the company.

INDIRECT COSTS NOT LEVIED ON NSERC PORTION OF THIS PROGRAM

NOTE: Letters of Intent and Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development Services for institutional signatures, and are to be accompanied by a completed RDAF form (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean signatures). Requests for Institutional signatures should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline.
