Description:

The CIHR Catalyst Grant program provides seed money, on a short-term basis, to support health research activities which represent a first step towards the pursuit of more comprehensive funding opportunities.

The purpose of this Catalyst Grant (Methods and Measures for Gender, Sex and Health Research) is to encourage and stimulate new and established investigators to undertake research that will advance methods and measures in the field of gender, sex and health research. Many health researchers have acknowledged the relevance of gender and sex and are working to incorporate these concepts in their research, yet there are obstacles to doing so. Gender and sex are complex and multifaceted concepts that are challenging to define and operationalize. Researchers often rely on the simple binary of male/female thereby failing to capture the heterogeneity of, and interrelationships between, sex and gender. It is widely accepted that, for the field of gender, sex and health research to advance, it is important for researchers to effectively capture gender and sex in health research. This will require collaborative work aimed at clarifying concepts, refining current approaches, and developing new methods and measures.

Application Details:

Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) will not be considered through this program. For projects of a high risk nature, the potential for great scientific gain should offset the risk of failure. There should be minimal or no overlap with other funded work.

Within the framework of the overall objectives of the CIHR Catalyst Grant Program, the specific objectives of this funding opportunity are: * To develop new and innovative research approaches to study the effects of gender and/or sex on health outcomes; * To develop new multidisciplinary research agendas that will advance methods and measures in gender, sex and health research; and * To develop and test measures, scales or indicators of sex and/or gender

INDIRECT COSTS ARE NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS PROGRAM

NOTE: Letters of Intent and Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development Services for institutional signatures, and are to be accompanied by a completed RDAF form (bearing applicant, Chair and Dean signatures). Requests for Institutional signatures should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline.
