Community of Science (Introduction to CoS)

The Community of Science (COS) Expertise Database

Features first person accounts of the research interests and expertise of university faculty and staff as well as their biographies, selected publications and research grants.

• This North American database has worldwide links as well as a separate Canadian Community of Science search capability.
• The University of Western Ontario's Faculty Expertise Database can be used to search, add, and update Western's faculty participation in the Community of Science database.

Community of Science Funding Opportunities Database

The University of Western Ontario subscribes to COS Funding Opportunities for all of our faculty and staff.

COS Funding Opportunities is the single most comprehensive source of funding information available on the web, with over 400,000 funding opportunities.  Sponsors include private foundations, public agencies, national and local governments, corporations, and more.  It is updated daily, and includes funding for many purposes such as research, collaborations, travel, curriculum development, conferences, equipment, training and more. 

Western has an institutional subscription to COS, which allows faculty to access the database from any campus computer. 

Users can also register for a username/password to log-in off campus. 

To access COS from off campus, you must log into a personal 'COS Workbench' account.  To establish your free 'COS Workbench' account:

1. Go to www.cos.com and click 'Register FREE' on the left side of the page under the COS logo, then click 'Join'.
2. Fill in all information fields marked with a red asterisk and click 'Create my Account'.
3. Remember to note your username and password.
