Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Humboldt Research Awards

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Humboldt Research Awards annually to scientists and scholars from abroad with internationally recognized academic qualifications. The research award honours the academic achievements of the award winner's lifetime. Furthermore, award winners are invited to carry out research projects of their own choice in Germany in cooperation with colleagues for periods of between six months and one year.

Application Method

The initiative for bestowing a Humboldt Research Award (nomination) must be taken by established researchers working at universities or other research institutions in Germany. Direct applications are not accepted. Usually, only full professors and scholars of equivalent status engaged in non-university work from any discipline and from any country may be nominated for the Humboldt Research Award. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation particularly encourages nominations of qualified female scientists and scholars. The Humboldt Research Award amounts to EUR 60,000.

In addition, the following services will be provided to Humboldt Awardees

within the framework of an invitation to conduct research in Germany:

• a single lump sum to cover expenses for round trip travel between the country of origin of the Awardee and Germany, for the awardee, his/her spouse, and children under the age of 18, provided that they reside with the Awardee in Germany for at least 6 months;
• financial assistance for the Awardee and his/her spouse to attend an intensive German language course.

Indirect costs are not supported by this program.

Process

Nominated applications to this award will be internally supported and reviewed through a subcommittee of the University Research Board. Applications should be vetted through your Faculty Dean's Office.

Nominations and Full Applications are to be processed through Research Development & Services for institutional signatures, and are to be accompanied by a completed ROLA Proposal. Requests for Institutional signatures should be received no less than 3 days prior to the posted Sponsor deadline.
