Industry Sponsored/Funded Research Fees

What is it?

The University requires an administration fee for industry and other contracted or funded protocols submitted for ethical review. Please note that this fee applies to submissions to the HSREB and the NMREB.

What is it used for?

The funds are used to pay for the infrastructure, staff and resources needed to process and store the significant number of revisions, adverse events reports, updated approvals and surveillance reports these types of studies usually generate. Please note that regular REB members are volunteers and do not receive payment for their REB work.

How much is the fee?

Effective December 1, 2006 the fee for funded protocols will be $3,000. Effective September 2007, the REB review fee for research conducted at any of the hospital sites/LHRI will be initially issued to LHRI, who will then pay the REB fee from the research account set up for the study.

What is exempt?

Peer-review agency supported, departmental or institutionally supported, and individual unfunded clinical investigations protocols will continue to be exempt from this REB administration fee.

What if the study is being done at more than one site in London?

If each site submits a separate protocol for review by the REB then the sponsor will be charged the full fee for each site. However, if the investigators agree to work together and include all sites under one ethics submission, then only one fee will be charged.

Can the fee be waived or reduced?

If you are unsure if a fee is required or feel that due to extenuating circumstances the REB fee should be waived or adjusted, you must provide a brief written explanation to the Office of Research Ethics prior to the submission of the protocol. If the nature of the study makes it unlikely there will be requests for revisions or updated approvals or significant adverse event reporting, the Office of Research Ethics will consider requests to reduce the fee. Do not assume that prior waivers or discounts will apply to subsequent submissions.
