The Chair's Mission:

  • Accelerate constituency building and knowledge sharing between Canada and Brazil;
  • Develop durable and sustainable relationships across all regions;
  • Fill a much-needed gap in Canada’s external relations with a bilateral partner of increasing global and regional importance.

By agreement among the partners, distinguished Brazilian scholars are invited to Canada each year for a period of at least two weeks. Typically, Chairs are expected to deliver at least one major address at each of the participating universities, meet with faculty, students, and representatives from both government and the private sector, and participate in organized events such as conferences or workshops.

The Canada Visiting Research Chair in Brazil Studies offers the prospect of:

  • Intensifying political linkages with the Embassy of Brazil, Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), the Brazil Association of Canadian Studies (ABECAN), the Brazilian Centre for International Relations (CEBRI) and other centres in Brazil;
  • Providing a vehicle for deepening national academic research cooperation in Canada for research in this field; and,
  • Establishing regular research and outreach projects with Brazilian centres where colleagues will keep all Canadian sectors abreast of important changes and developments in South America.  The new research capacity will also have the potential to test the possibility for Canada and Brazil to work together in the development of activities in other countries.
