An Agenda For Change

Since Canada and Brazil are natural partners with converging interests, Canadians and Brazilians should be doing much more together to strengthen their roles in the Western Hemisphere and in the international arena.

The Canadian Visiting Research Chair in Brazil Studies serves to strengthen academic, business, economic, and cultural networks and relationships.  Through joint and applied research projects, the Chair:

  • Establishes regular, cooperative research linkages with Brazilian centres and colleagues.
  • Identifies new trends in the bilateral relationship through dialogue, workshops, and joint projects.
  • Provides a natural resource for government agencies in evaluating existing programmes and in undertaking applied research in new areas of bilateral cooperation.
  • Assesses the multilateral dimension of Canada – Brazil relations with special reference to international trade and governance, peacekeeping, regional security, and non-proliferation.
  • Establishes an intersectoral forum for bilateral trade and investment issues.
  • Identifies opportunities for improved Canadian and Brazilian development cooperation in regions such as the Southern Cone and Southern Africa.
  • Organizes and promotes student research and exchanges with Brazil.
  • Creates the appropriate liaison for public and private sector internships and language training.
  • Deepens outreach to the Canadian Brazilian community.
