Research Development & Services (RD&S)

RD&S' primary role is to assist faculty members and University administrators in gaining a competitive edge when it comes to external, internal, and international funding proposals. RD&S also plays an important role in identifying funding opportunities that are consistent with the University's research strengths and emerging priority areas.

Contract Research

The Contract Research Team provides assistance to Western's researchers to facilitate negotiation of Technical Service Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, Research Contracts, Grant Agreements, Sub grants, Subcontracts, and Inter-Institutional Agreements.

The Contract Research Team works in conjunction with RD&S, and WORLDiscoveries to support those projects and initiatives under the direction of Research Western. The goals of the Contract Research Team are to protect the interests of the Researcher and the University, and to ensure that sponsor guidelines (as applicable) are followed in the agreement and sub-agreement processes. The Contract Research Team facilitates, interacts with, and represents the rights of the University and the researchers to ensure compliance with the guidelines of the funding Sponsors (as applicable).

Research Ethics

Research Ethics is responsible for the administration of the approval process for the use of human subjects in research at Western. All research involving human participants conducted by faculty, staff or students at Western or its affiliated hospitals and research institutes must be approved by one of the two research ethics boards established at Western. Research Ethics is responsible for the administration of those committees and ensuring that Western is compliant with external research ethics and integrity guidelines.

WORLDiscoveries

WORLDiscoveries™ is the new business development arm of London’s extensive research network and the bridge between local invention and global industry.

Born out of a partnership between Research Western, Robarts Research Institute, and Lawson Health Research Institute (collectively known as the ‘Partners’), WORLDiscoveries™ draws upon a mix of industry connections, sector-specific market knowledge, and business development expertise, to help researchers and local inventors commercialize their discoveries through licensing and new company spin-offs.

Research Accounting

Research Accounting is part of the department of Financial Services and plays an integral role in supporting the research environment at Western. The Research Accounting unit supports the research mission of Western by providing expert advice, financial accountability, and ongoing management of all research funds. We work closely with researchers, administrative units, funding sponsors and RD&S to ensure adherence to funding guidelines and policies.

Research Accounting manages the post-award functions for all research grants and contracts at the University. This includes monitoring cash flows and expenditures, communicating with funding sponsors, and completing financial reporting.

Purchasing

It is very important at both the grant application and post approval stages that complete and competitive quotations be obtained for goods and services required. This is to ensure the costing is accurate and the best value for money is realized. The Purchasing Department works with the researcher and supplier community to satisfy these requirements in accordance with proper process while minimizing the administrative effort for the researcher. The researcher always controls the specifications and ultimately makes the final decision, but Purchasing provides assistance to get there.

Research and Development Park

The Western University Research and Development Park promotes and supports private and public-sector research and development appropriate to the research activities and interests of the University and to the economic and social goals of the region, the province, and the country. Research and development activities in both of the Park's campuses (London and Sarnia) also frequently involve collaboration with faculty members of the University and associated research personnel.

This exciting environment brings together entrepreneurial spirit, academic excellence, and technical expertise to work toward a common purpose. Now, with two separate campuses operating under the Research Park banner, a distinct Park culture has emerged and co-operative ventures have developed among the tenants themselves.

Research Communications

The Research Communications Manager coordinates communications, government relations and media relations efforts that positively position the University's research activities. The Manager also presents comparative data about research funding at Western, and is a liaison to external partners for communications-related activities that ensure the University's research story is heard locally, nationally and internationally.

Associate Deans Research &
Faculty Research Facilitators

The Associate Deans Research are the signing authority for the faculty and are responsible for: the research facilitator roles (available in some faculties), assisting with increasing Western's research capacity by facilitating researchers with grant proposals, and aiding in the search for funding opportunities beyond the Tri-Council support.
