United Way campaign begins this month

It is an honour and privilege to serve as Chair of the 2005 Campaign Cabinet for the United Way of London & Middlesex, and I look forward to the challenge of leading another successful campaign both here on campus and in the broader community.

This year’s campus campaign will be led by Co-Chairs Betsy Skarakis-Doyle (Associate Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences) and Gary Blazak (Director, Alumni Relations), who will be working closely with volunteer Campaign Coordinators from each of Western’s Faculties, Schools and large administrative departments. Training sessions for these volunteers will be held September 22, 26 and 27.

Our dollar goal for 2005 will be announced at the Homecoming football game October 1 when our Mustangs take on the York Lions. Last year, Western raised a record-breaking $377,000 for local charities, and I’m confident that we can succeed in surpassing that amount for 2005.

Among the various campus special events connected with this year’s campaign, we plan to increase Western’s campus-wide participation in the annual stair climb hosted at One London Place. Sponsored by Western’s Wellness Committee, the “Western Step It Up!” program aims to increase faculty and staff fitness levels while raising awareness and support for the United Way. Watch Western News and our United Way Web site for more details, or plan to join us September 20 at noon at the main entrance to University College to learn more about this fun event.
