6,500 graduates welcomed as Western alumni
Western’s 284th convocation will prove to be one of the most memorable in our University’s history. Over five days and 10 ceremonies, the high point of our academic year saw 6,500 new Western graduates cross the stage to receive their degrees and diplomas. We also recognized the respective achievements of 10 honorary degree recipients: Doris Anderson, Bill Brock, Maude Barlow, Edward A. Malloy , Bohuslav Kymlicka, Robert Colcleugh, Henry Morgentaler, Bessie Borwein, Marc Lalonde and Jack Fairs.
I was impressed by the environment of respect and tolerance that I saw on our campus June 16 when Dr. Morgentaler received his honorary degree. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and other members of the community – regardless of their personal views about Dr. Morgentaler and the honour Western chose to bestow upon him – affirmed their beliefs and faith in a way that fully respected Convocation, our graduating students and their families.
We have something to be proud of in our city and within our campus community when we can hold different points of view, state them openly, and demonstrate peacefully.
