About London

London is the heart of Southwestern Ontario, a region embraced by two of the Great Lakes and featuring Canada's most southerly heritage River - the Thames.  With a population of 432,000, London is Canada's 10th largest city and is located halfway between Toronto and Detroit.

London is known as the Forest City for its treed areas and numerous public parks throughout the city.  There is an extensive trail system that runs along the Thames River, right onto Western's campus, for walking, running, biking or rollerblading.  For many of Western's faculty, these trails provide the primary method of transportation to the University.

Recent investments in downtown London include a new Convention Centre, a new Central library, the Covent Garden Market and the John Labatt Centre - the third largest entertainment venue in Canada, behind Toronto and Montreal.  The Labatt Centre is also home to Western's men's hockey team, the London Knights (Ontario Hockey League) and the London Lightning (National Basketball League).   One of the many activities enjoyed by Londoners include watching fast paced hockey followed by a relaxing drink at one of our many pubs.

During the summer months, it is easy to enjoy the festivities of downtown London that take place in Victoria Park including Sunfest, the Rib Fest, Blues festival and Doors Open.  Many galleries, shops and upscale restaurants inhabit this stretch of Richmond street and one can make a night of dinner and the theatre.  Dining enthusiasts can enjoy a range of choices including Caribbean, Korean, Latin American, Iranian, Italian and Indian.  In the winter months, look forward to the annual lighting of the trees in Victoria park which starts the holiday season.  Cross country skiing, skating in Victoria Park and hot chocolate also highlight the winter months.
