David Gemeinhardt is a graduate of Western’s Modern Languages department. On graduating in 1997, he took up a teaching position in rural South Korea before going on to work as a language teacher and occasional translator in Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Seoul. He was an early donor to the Pride Library, in fact so early that his first donations merely sat on a shelf in Professor Miller’s office in University Tower. Since that time, David has donated several hundred titles, ranging from 19th and 20th century fiction and biographies to queer periodicals from Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand. Queer Hollywood is another theme of his donations, including a number of original edition LPs by Marlene Dietrich. A life member of the Korea branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, David made the very first donation of a Korean-language book to the Pride Library.
