The overall goal of the Green Award is to recognize those who champion the cause of environmentalism and challenge others to change their own behaviours. The reward acknowledges the work of campus groups and individuals from all groups on campus; student, faculty, and staff. The awards were designed to inspire the recipients and nominees to continue their activism, as well as the present them as models for the rest of the community to take note.
Western's Green Awards launched in 2008. The program was developed by Facilities Management and sponsored by AVP, Resources and Operations, Gitta Kulczycki. In the true nature of environmentalism, the awards were developed with a grassroots approach. An approach that will allow for growth and progression in future years. In its inaugural year, three recipients were chosen from more than 30 well-deserving nominations. Lois Armstrong (Faculty of Education), the Hospitality Services Sustainability Committee, and Andy Merucci (Facilities Management) were acknowledged for their initiatives.

Our Sustainable Campus - Beginning in 2007, a Western News column geared towards shedding light on the efforts being made on campus was established. The column, called Our Sustainable Campus, continues to run on a monthly frequency and tends to provide insight into some of the lesser known projects that are having major impacts on campus.
In 2008, a web site was launched to bring the community together on sustainability issues. The conservation tips portion of the site is a simple tool offering new ways of thinking about sustainability. We all know that its not the large efforts of a few that will Save The World, but rather the millions of people that do the little things. The tips puts the power in the hands of the individuals in our community, who will make a difference.
The initiatives directory on the site is the first step in centralizing the efforts being conducted all over campus. UWO has a lot to celebrate with regards to sustainability efforts on campus, but it has been doing so quietly. The site is a 'blow-horn', announcing the successes to date.
The Hospitality Services Sustainability Committee - In 2008, Hospitality Services developed a committee to celebrate current sustainable practices and set goals for future initiatives. The mission statement reads; "Hospitality Services is committed to creating, producing and enhancing a sustainable culture for the life legacy of the Western community. The committee received the Western Green Award recognizing their efforts.
Faculty Energy Champions - In 2006, faculty members from all disciplines joined together to challenge their colleagues to make a difference. The committee sought to provide concrete solutions to real issues on campus and within their own departments. It wasn't long before the word got out about the energy champions group and interest began to see the committee grow.
Recruitment for an inclusive group (staff, students, faculty) of environmental champions is underway. If you wish to be involved with Western's Committee for the Environment, contact Brandon Watson, bwatso5@uwo.ca.
