We recieved a lot of interest from our innaguaral year and that has prompted Facilities Management to team up with EnviroWestern once again.
Using the results from last year's challenge (See the full results from WRC 2008-09), we hope to encourage improvement.
There were a few buildings that were not audited last year. This year we will be sure to inculde those that were not involved.
If all recyclables found their way to the appropriate blue box, roughly a quarter of Western's total refuse would go to landfill.
Recycling remains a priority at Western. Facilities Management has increased the number of recycling containers, augmented the numbers of items that can be recycled and increased awareness through signage, posters, and news articles.
To further support the recycling program, Facilities Management is issuing it's second Western Recycling Challenge to the campus community. Through unannounced, random audits, the challenge will encourage campus building inhabitants to be mindful of their waste by comparing their results to one another.
Each month, up to a half-dozen buildings will be audited. A reasonable sample size (bags of trash) will be taken from those select buildings and separated in to two categories, recyclables and non-recyclables. The building(s) with the smallest ratio of recyclables to waste in their trash bins will be the monthly challenge champion.
At the end of the year, most campus buildings will have been audited and the one with the smallest percentage of recyclables in the trash will be recognized with the Western’s Recycling Challenge award and be crowned as a model facility for recycling.
Each audit will be conducted under the watchful eye of the EnviroWestern team, who has orchestrated similar audits over the past five years. Challenge updates will be published on this page (see above).
The only thing left to do is get onboard - are you in Western's greenest building?
