In order to maintain a state of readiness in the event of a local emergency, Western University conducted an annual Disaster Planning Exercise on Monday, May 12, 2014. This year's exercise, entitled Harmony 9, consisted of a "Severe Weather Emergency", during which a simulated tornado caused substantial damage to several buildings and several minor "injuries" to occupants. Participants in the exercise included: Campus Police, London Fire Dept., Student Emergency Response Team, Western Fire Safety, Western's HAZMAT Team, and Facilities Management. Behind the scenes, Western's Emergency Operations Control Group and Continuity of Operations Planning Group were also tested. The exercise was conducted over several hours during the morning, and provided a great opportunity for many disciplines to work together on a major incident. The exercise, which surfaced several learning points to be addressed was deemed to be a success by all involved. The organizers of the incident are confident Western's First Responders and support groups stand ready to deal with any emergency.
