About Campus Community Police Service

Campus Community Police Service

Campus Police Service, with 30 staff, is involved in activities that include Patrols, Response, Crime Prevention, Emergency Management and Fire Safety. Our Special Constables have the Police Officer powers necessary to deal with most issues found on campus. Some of the other associated services in support of campus safety include the Student Emergency Response Team, Volunteer Foot Patrollers, Occupational Health and Safety, Equity Services, Housing and others. Our 911 Communications Centre receives thousands of enquiries and calls each year. In addition to dispatching Special Constables for service they also monitor campus safety video cameras, intrusion systems, fire alarms, and blue emergency phones and dispatch contract security guards at Western, as well as Brescia and Kings University Colleges and several other areas. While most Campus Policing issues are dealt with by our Special Constables, in the case of very serious crimes such as sexual assault, London Police are contacted.

Campus Police Authority

The Special Constables at Western are often asked about their authority; where it comes from and what powers they have. The following explanation may help to clarify this.

Campus Community Police 'special constables' are each approved by the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and receive their official appointment at a "swearing in ceremony" on behalf of the London Police Services Board. This is one of the reasons there continues to be a close affiliation between London Police and Campus Police.

Campus Community Police have many of the same powers and authority on campus as London Police have for the entire Province of Ontario. Authority for CCPS is limited to the area within the boundary lines of the University and affiliate's properties.

All stakeholders on campus share in the safety, security and quality of life at Western. Each person has a role and responsibility. Campus Community Police continue to be diligent in their efforts to maintain a proactive service environment of safety and security; one that is responsive, knowledgeable and professional in meeting today's standards as well as anticipating the challenges and expectations of the future.
