Well Done!

Members of the Bone and Joint Initiative including several JuMP Trainees at Western formed Team Bernier (in honour of the late Dr. Suzanne Bernier) lead by Team Captain Anusha Ratneswaran and took the top prize for fund-raising dollars in London (out of 38 teams) raising just over $4200 dollars. Bone & Joint Featured Research

Groundbreaking research has been published in the December 2013 volume of The Journal of Biological Chemistry through the Bone & Joint Initiative in collaboration with Nihon University, the University of Calgary, and Gilead Sciences, Inc. The research team identified the "slective inhibition of PI3K isoforms" as a "new approach for the treatment of inglammatory bone dieseased and skeletal metastases" according to Stephen Sims, PhD, a supervisor for the project.

Welcome!

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Cheryle Seguin to the JuMP Program as the new Co-Director.  Cheryle will be working with Trevor Birmingham to wind up the program in its final years.  This is certainly a bitter sweet announcement as Dr. Jeff Dixon takes leave of the program leadership of which he has been such a integral part.  We look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Dixon when he returns from his sabbatical as a Mentor and "Leader at Large" .

IMPORTANT:

The next competition deadline for the Joint Motion Trainee Program is June 1st, 2014 for a September 1st, 2014 Program Intake.

Contact the Program Coordinator if you have any questions.

CIHR Fellowship Program

Deadline change and reminder about moving to one competition per year

This serves as a reminder that beginning in the Fall 2013, CIHR will only be offering one Fellowship competition per year. Despite this change, the number of fellowships awarded will be maintained at approximately 170 per year and the overall budget allocated to this program will remain unchanged at $21M over five years.

To ensure the successful implementation of this change, the CIHR Fellowship awards competition deadline will be moving to November 15, 2013 (rather than October 1) and the anticipated notice of decision will be on April 30, 2014. Although the deadline date is delayed for this competition, eligibility of candidates will not be impacted for this year as, exceptionally for this competition, applicants' eligibility will be calculated as of October 1, 2013.

Should you have questions, we encourage you to consult the CIHR website for details regarding the program and how to apply:

Early Phase Clinical Trials in Imaging and Image-Guided Interventions (R21)

PAR-11-216

Submission Dates: November 13, 2013; March 13, 2014, by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization.

intended to support clinical trials conducting preliminary evaluation of the safety and efficacy of imaging agents, as well as an assessment of imaging systems, image processing, image-guided therapy, contrast kinetic modeling, and 3-D reconstruction and other quantitative tools. As many such preliminary evaluations are early in development, this FOA will provide investigators with support for pilot (Phase I and II) cancer imaging clinical trials, including patient monitoring and laboratory studies. The imaging and Image-guided Intervention (IGI) investigations, if proven successful in these early clinical trials, can then be validated in larger studies through competitive R01 mechanisms, or through clinical trials in the Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs), Cancer Center and/or Cooperative Groups.

All awards are for up to $500,000 in Direct Costs over 2 years.
