Current Research and Research Projects I. Research Groups. The Upper Canada Society for Ancient and Medieval Philosophy. Informally known as the “Greek Philosophy Gang”, The Upper Canada Society for Ancient and Medieval Philosophy is a research group formed on the principle that a student’s academic life and social life are intimately joined. Our vision is to establish a community of graduate students and faculty members interested in ancient and medieval philosophy, who meet regularly to discuss the philosophical ideas of antiquity. The meetings themselves have come to take on the atmosphere of a traditional Greek symposium: a gathering of minds, over wine and dinner, for the purpose of philosophical discussion. The aim is to offer graduate students and faculty alike a forum to present work-in-progress in a relaxed social setting where they can receive feedback from others working in the area. The “Gang” has become a very distinctive feature of the philosophy program at Western and continues to have a positive impact on the experience of students and faculty alike. It has even begun to attract the attention of scholars from surrounding universities, many of whom regularly attend our evenings. II.
