Admission Requirements for Research-Based M.Sc. & Ph.D.

 

Degree Requirements: Applicants must have obtained an Honours degree (4 year degree) in the Sciences. Although there are no prerequisites for enry into the program, courses in antomy, biochemistry, histology and/or molecular biology are strongly recommended. A minimum academic average of 78% (Domestic), 80% (International) during the final two years of the undergraduate program is required.
Applicants with a M.Sc. degree in one of the named disciplines will also be considered, as will applicants with M.D. or D.D.S. degrees. Meeting the minimum requirement does not guarantee acceptance to the program.
International Students: Students who are not Canadian residents and whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL examination. Applicants must have a total overall score of 90 with a minimum score of 23 in the speaking portion of the iBT test and no other score less than 20.
Please note photocopies of TOEFL scores are not acceptable. When submitting an application please arrange to have an original score sent to the University, directly from the issuing office. [Western's TOEFL ID is 0984].

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

The Department of Pathology offers Research Based M.Sc. and Ph.D. graduate degrees in Full-time and Part-time studies. These degrees require completion of a research intensive thesis, course work and participation in a seminar program.
Please note the Department cannot pre-evaluate copies of transcripts to ascertain if you should apply to our program. A complete application must be submitted for review.
Applicants are responsible to ensure that a complete application package is submitted. Incomplete applications WILL NOT be assessed by the Graduate Studies Committee.

  1. OFFICIAL Transcripts (photocopies are not acceptable): Two copies of all current/previous university transcripts should be forwarded to the Dept. Transcripts must be in sealed envelopes. (Foreign transcripts should include an original language as well as an English translation).
  2. TWO letters of Recommendation from recent professors or scientific supervisors.
  3. Application Fee of $100 Canadian
  4. A brief letter outlining future goals, the Graduate Program of interest (Pathology or Ecosystem Health) and specific areas of interest as well as the reason(s) for wishing to pursue a graduate degree. Any past experiences (academic, occupational, volunteer) that the applicant considers relevant to his/her application should also be highlighted in this letter.
  5. Original TOEFL score. (If your first language is NOT English please arrange to have an original score sent directly to the University from the issuing office).

Application Process: Completed applications are reviewed by The Graduate Studies Committee in The Department of Pathology. Successful applicants are encouraged to browse the research interests of faculty and contact them by e-mail. Alternatively we encourage students to visit our department and talk with faculty and graduate students.
