This is an example of a nosocomial pneumonia.

Most nosocomial pneumonias are caused by highly pathogenic organisms which in some instances are antibiotic resistant. In this case he had developed methycillin-resistant staphylococcal pneumonia.

Predisposing causes:
In this case neurologic compromise with poor cough reflex and the availability of highly pathogenic organisms in the hospital environment.

If he had survived, possible complications he could have developed include - lung abscess (example below), pyothorax, empyema or septicemia.
