Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

 

The key goals of the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine program are to provide evidenced-based and outcome driven antenatal and newborn care, provide developmentally supportive family-centered care, nurture an environment that fosters collaborative clinical research, support interdisciplinary education, and embrace the Mission, Vision and Values set out by the health centre.

 

The 42-bed level II and III Newborn Units at St. Joseph's Health Care London (SJHC) serve a population of 1.4 million in Southwestern Ontario and provide care for critically ill and premature newborns. The Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is part of the network of 7 tertiary care NICU's across Ontario. Our Developmental Follow Up Clinic team provides post discharge monitoring of NICU patients from the Southwestern Ontario region up to 3 years of age. Our Regional Perinatal Outreach Program of Southwestern Ontario provide our regional Perinatal Departments with continuing medical and nursing education.

 

Our Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited subspecialty training program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine offers a 2 year fellowship program Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Training Program Brochure. Our training program also provides clinical training in Newborn Medicine for medical residents in Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Family Medicine and Anaesthesia and undergraduate medical students.

 

Our faculty have special interests and research expertise in clinical trails and epidemiology, neonatal database, growth factors and fetal physiology, neonatal resuscitation, pulmonary physiology, neonatal gastroenterology and nutrition, medical bioethics and medical education.


The Team:

The interdisciplinary team is comprised of Neontalogists, Clinical Assistants, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Registered Respiratory Therapists, Physiotherapists, Pharmacist, Registered Dietitian, Lactation Consultants, Social Workers, Pastoral Care, and trainees from each of the disciplines.

1. Canadian citizen/permanent residents enrolled in an accredited Core Pediatrics residency program in a Canadian or ACGME-accredited American university. Applications are to be submitted to CaRMS (www.carms.ca). Timelines for our program: application deadline - April 9, 2010, invitation for interview: April 23, 2010, interviews: May 3-28, 2010. CaRMS match day - June 23, 2010, CaRMS post match process - June 25-July 13, 2010.

 

2. Non-Canadian citizen/permanent residents with specialty certification in Pediatrics from their country of training. Please submit your curriculum vitae directly to our Program Director (doris.yuen@sjhc.london.on.ca). Eligible candidates will be invited to submit applications.
