As a sub-specialty of Paediatrics, the Infectious Disease program provides care to patients with serious infections and other communicable problems in infants and children.
With several new infectious diseases at the forefront including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), West Nile Virus, Hepatitis C, the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrom (AIDS) and Lyme Disease, there have been many challenges for health care workers across Ontario. Some children are particularly vulnerable to infection; those that are pre-term children, children in special care settings such as transplantation and Critical Care. The provision of consultative services is therefore becoming increasingly important.
